best day of my life part II

A few weeks ago I blogged how I went to a meeting with Sally Preston, the publisher of Living and just had an amazing time. Well today, I actually met up with her for a one-on-one meeting. It was everything I could dream of. Sally is so inviting and said she would help me in any way possible. She even offered to be a reference for me! How cool is that!? I really wish I was already graduated...

We discussed so many topics, including traveling since I graduate in December, grad school, my opportunities, life in general, MSLO, pretty much anything. I seriously could not have asked for anything more.

I was really nervous going into the meeting, but after she gave me a huge hug, I knew I'd be OK. I had a list of questions prepared, but didn't really ask any of them, I was so absorbed in what she had to say, I didn't really see the need to. I feel comfortable enough e-mailing her at anytime, so I'll do that if anything comes up.

She was telling me how one of the other publishers from my "perfect" day said I was a great person with great opportunities but the real test would be if I sent a handwritten thank you note. It is funny to actually hear that is how people judge you. We hear it time after time in school, but really don't think it has an impact. Liz truly thought it was a deal breaker. I am so happy I wrote a thank you note, I feel as if it really helped them realize I am so serious about getting into this industry. THANK YOU MARYVILLE for drilling thank you notes into our heads!!

Tonight after work I went to an ed2010 happy hour at Red Skies Bar. ed2010 is an organization for aspiring magazine professionals, mostly interns are members. I think majority are on the editing side, but oh well. It is great to meet new people.

Before going, Sarah and I ate a brgr, per a recommendation from my mentor from the Regional Business Council in St. Louis. He has done business with them commercially, so it was fun to kind of see the end result of his job. The burgers were really good. I feel as if I haven't enjoyed a burger in a long time. They supposedly they were voted best shake in NYC, but we didn't try them since we were going to have drinks later in the evening.

Today was a day full of new contacts. I had a great opportunity with Sally and I met some great people at the happy hour. I love this networking thing! I have so many informationals to set up!
